AS9102 Form 3 — Characteristic Accountability

AS9102 Form 3 (Characteristic Accountability) is the dimensional and functional measurement record at the core of the FAI. It lists every characteristic identified on the engineering drawing and records the actual measured value, the tolerance, and the conformance status.

Each characteristic from the ballooned drawing appears as a row in Form 3: balloon number, characteristic description, nominal dimension, tolerance (min/max limits), actual measured value, and pass/fail status. Critical Characteristics (CC) and Significant Characteristics (SC) are flagged separately.

Form 3 is the most labor-intensive part of the FAI package. In traditional workflows, engineers manually balloon the drawing and transcribe every dimension into a spreadsheet. Tools like BullePlan automate this by extracting characteristics directly from the PDF drawing and generating the Form 3 with pre-calculated min/max limits.

The customer reviews Form 3 to confirm that 100% of design characteristics have been verified on the first production unit, with actual measurement data — not nominal values.

Concrete example

A housing with 120 ballooned characteristics requires 120 rows in Form 3, each with an actual measurement. One out-of-tolerance characteristic is sufficient to reject the FAI.
