Design Record — Engineering Design Documentation

The Design Record is the complete set of engineering documents that define the part: the drawing (or 3D model dataset), referenced specifications, material callouts, and any customer-specific requirements. It is the primary reference for all FAI activities.

In a model-based definition (MBD) environment, the Design Record may be a 3D annotated model rather than a traditional 2D drawing. Both formats are acceptable under AS9102, provided all characteristics are identifiable and measurable.

AS9102 Form 1 is specifically dedicated to recording and controlling the Design Record: listing each document, its revision level, and confirming it was the revision used during manufacturing and inspection.

The Design Record must be frozen before the FAI begins. Any change to the Design Record after FAI approval triggers a partial or full re-FAI, depending on the scope of the change and customer requirements.

Concrete example

The Design Record for a landing gear bracket includes: drawing BP-2042 Rev. D, 3D model BP-2042-D.step, material spec AMS 4044, heat treatment spec BAC 5619, and the applicable CAGE code requirements.
