What is FAIR AS9102?
The FAIR (First Article Inspection Report), also called FAI (First Article Inspection), is an inspection process governed by the AS9102 / EN9102 standard. It applies in aerospace and space to validate that the production process is capable of manufacturing parts conforming to the drawing, from the very first article.
A complete FAIR includes 3 standardized forms. For an in-depth guide on the PPAP/FAIR context, visit ppap-fai.approche-qualite.fr.
Form 1 — Part Number Accountability
Form 1 is the administrative identity card of the FAIR. It contains:
- Part number and revision level
- Supplier name and reference
- Purchase order number
- FAI lot quantity and serial number (if applicable)
- FAI reason (new part, revision change, process change…)
- Supplier and customer approval signatures
Form 2 — Product Accountability
Form 2 ensures material and special process traceability:
- Material designation and specification (e.g. AMS 2770, AMS 4037…)
- 3.1 material certificate (per EN 10204)
- Material supplier and lot/heat number
- Special processes applied (heat treatment, coating, welding…)
- Nadcap certifications for special process subcontractors
Form 3 — Characteristic Accountability (the core of the FAIR)
Form 3 is the most technical and voluminous FAIR form. It lists 100% of the dimensional and specification characteristics from the drawing, including for each one: balloon number, drawing reference, nominal value, tolerances, measured value, measurement device, conformance result.
The standard requires that every characteristic be measured — no sampling is possible on Form 3, unlike automotive PPAP. A drawing with 200 dimensions generates a 200-row Form 3.
Automate Form 3 with BullePlan
BullePlan fully digitalises Form 3 creation: upload your PDF/PNG/JPG drawing, AI-assisted ballooning extracts nominal values and tolerances automatically, generates the pre-filled Form 3 table, and exports to Excel or PDF ready for submission.
